YMCA DLG is launching a range of Study Programmes that offer learners aged 16-18 (or 19+ with a statement or EHP) genuine sector specific skills and training, with embedded functional skills, and work experience.  This is a great opportunity and stepping stone towards further education, apprenticeships or employment.

 

Working in partnership with Y Training YMCA DLG will deliver courses in Brighton & Hove, Hastings, Horsham and Guildford (TBC). Our skilled and dedicated tutors will ensure all learners receive top quality training and support, and our Learning and Education team will be on hand to help them decide and take that next step.

Below is an outline of the Sport offer in Horsham:

Monday – Thursday 9.30 – 4.30 (27 hours a week)                                                                                 
Starting on Monday 11th September  

Course Description:
This is a 20 week study programme for 16 – 18 year olds or 19+ with a statement / EHCP. Participants will be focusing on employability skills, sports leadership and functional skills and a work placement. This course will provide the young people with the skills, qualifications, knowledge and experience needed to progress into employment. You will take part in activities such as high ropes, kayaking, spinning, fitness testing, circuits, swimming, orienteering along with general sports such as football, rounders, basketball.

We expect an 80% attendance and we have policies around attendance, sickness, holiday and behaviour that we will be asking each young person to sign to confirm they understand what they are agreeing to follow.

Typical Day:

Weeks 1 – 8 participants will be focusing on Functional Skills, qualifications in English and Maths, Sport Leaders Level 1 Award, one full day a week of practical sessions with industry visits and pathways to employment. Functional skills exams will be taken in weeks 7,8 and 9.  We hope that by week 10 work placements have been secured for learners to attend one day a week.

Weeks 10 – 20 participants will continue with the sports leadership, teamwork and any other coaching qualifications that we are able to take advantage of. The practical sports sessions and industry visits will continue with the learning focus on Employability and finding work placements for everyone.  Learners will work on interview techniques, first impressions and developing confidence for interviews.

We offer tea, coffee, toast and cereal for breakfast from 9 -9.20am. Lunch is provided and there will be sufficient breaks throughout the day.

Qualifications:

By completing the full 20 week programme learners will gain:

  • Laser Level 1 Certificate in Learning, Employability and Progression
  • Sports Leaders Level 1 Award
  • First Aid
  • Manual Handling
  • Food Hygiene
  • English and Maths Functional Skills

Other Information:

Students may be entitled to a bursary to assist with travel expenses. If necessary, they can also be put through the process of a DBS check. They will receive a polo shirt or hoodie bearing the team logo which the group will design themselves.
