About the Position

Are you an enthusiastic person who is up for a challenge and enjoys working with young people? If so, we would love to hear from you!

We currently recruiting volunteer mentors to support vulnerable young people from across Sussex. Positive Placements Mentoring is part of the More Than a Room service offer. Volunteer mentors will work to support 16 – 25 years old, who are NEET (not in education, employment or training), on their journey towards education, employment or training and who would like extra support in achieving their goals.

Young people being referred might be at risk of homelessness, live in supported housing, experience anxiety or emotional health issues, be a young parent, take alcohol/drugs that are affecting their work life, been in trouble with the police, or left school early with few or no qualifications. You might also be supporting young people who have parental support, but need additional support. Volunteer Mentors will play a crucial role in working with a young person to identify and work towards achieving their goals, for example building confidence, improving time keeping, getting a job or accessing educational opportunities.

All sorts of people become mentors with YMCA DownsLink Group and we encourage applicants from all sections of the community. To become a volunteer mentor you don’t need to have specific formal qualifications but you will need patience, resilience, empathy and tolerance. You will also need to be able to relate well to young people and enjoy spending time in their company. A sense of humour is essential!

Please note that we will be reviewing applications regularly and the role will close once we have reached our capacity for volunteers.
