Supported Housing Support Worker Mark Cranley is always looking to improve life for the young people living in our Eastbourne supported housing service. By building links with the local Morrison’s store, he is helping residents access essential food and toiletries in the face of increasing financial pressure.
Our supported housing in Eastbourne have benefited from close relationships with local businesses to source essentials for residents, but over time, donations have declined.
In February this year, Mark noticed contact details for the store manager while visiting Morrisons Eastbourne. He reached out — and very quickly found himself in conversation with Community Champion Kim Hatcher‑Davis.
Together, they arranged for a food collection basket to be placed in-store.
Kim said:
“Supporting YMCA Downslink Group, young people and helping them feel safe, supported and valued is incredibly important to us.
Having a food donation bin in Morrisons Eastbourne is our way of showing that commitment and giving back to our community.”
At a time when funding is scarce across the sector, this support has made a real difference. In a personal show of thanks, Mark Cranley even paid in plants, along with a promise of future produce from his allotment.

Today, food items, toiletries and small treats are available in the main reception area, allowing residents to help themselves as and when they need to. Mark manages stock levels, and residents have been thoughtful and considerate — ensuring everyone can access what they need.
What’s next
With access to generous supplies of breakfast cereals and long-life milk, Mark was able to start a breakfast club for the residents. More than just food, it offers residents a chance to connect, share time together and start the day with a sense of community. The feedback has already been very positive with young people appreciating the attention and how it sets off their day to a good start.
A heartfelt thank you
This work is aligned with our values – we do what’s right, we work with heart, we build real connection – and reflects our focus on local partnerships, practical support and a shared commitment to work alongside young people in consistent and meaningful ways.
A huge shoutout to Mark Cranley for making this happen.
