Today (10 September) is World Suicide Prevention Day and we are are proud to support Sussex Health & Care’s campaign encouraging people to have conversations that could save lives.
The campaign has been developed by NHS organisations, local authorities, voluntary sector partners and people with lived experience across Sussex. It aims to help people recognise warning signs, feel confident asking someone if they are having suicidal thoughts, and understand where to access support.
At YMCA DownsLink Group, we work alongside children, young people and adults across Sussex and Surrey. Every day we see the importance of feeling heard, connected and supported, especially during difficult times.

Stories like this remind us that small acts of kindness, checking in on someone, listening carefully or helping them find support, can make a meaningful difference.
Talking about suicide can feel difficult, but asking someone directly if they are thinking about suicide does not increase risk. It can help someone feel understood and open the door to getting help.
You do not need to have all the answers. Simply listening and helping someone connect with support can make a difference.
