Sophie’s story

Sophie* had to leave her foster placement and had nowhere to go. After moving into the Y Centre, she was able to complete a course to prepare her for university and will soon be starting a degree. Sophie tells us more in her own words 👇

“In 2022 I had to leave my foster placement as it was coming to an end and I needed to move out. I had nowhere to go and I was really struggling with my mental health.

“I had an interview at the Y Centre and, since moving in, I have overcome many challenges which I’m mega proud of. My mental health got better, I learnt how to live independently and was able to support others in the Y Centre with their own mental health battles and planning for the future.

“I finished my bridging course and received the highest grade in my class. Even without GCSE Maths, I have been accepted to study an undergraduate degree in Childhood and Therapeutic Play at university. I leave the Y Centre soon and I’m excited to start the next part of my life.

“Overall, I have had a really positive experience while living here; the support I have received was fabulous and memorable. I enjoyed being a part of the YMCA DownsLink Group community. Taking part in interviews for new members of staff meant that our voices were heard and I felt more included in the support I received.

“I have made friends for life here and I hope that my room can hold many more happy memories for its next resident.”
