Maria’s story

Maria (pictured above in the middle) was working on her dissertation this year, but that hasn’t stopped her from finding time to volunteer as a YMCA DownsLink Group Youth Ambassador – and even take part in a media production project with one of our corporate partners.

Our Youth Ambassador Programme, run by e‑wellbeing (our youth‑led digital wellbeing service), offers young people the chance to share their experiences, develop skills, and shape how mental health support is designed and delivered.

“Being a Youth Ambassador has been such a great experience.”

Finding her voice

Maria first came across e-wellbeing through a friend who was already involved.

“Once I heard about the programme, I was immediately drawn to it because it gives young people a voice in shaping mental health support. I wanted to be part of a space where young people are not just receiving support, but actively influencing how it’s designed and delivered.”

She joined hoping to build confidence in talking about mental health and to understand more about how digital wellbeing services work behind the scenes. She also wanted to step out of her comfort zone and take on new opportunities.

Highlights that made an impact

One of the most meaningful parts of the programme for Maria has been the feeling of being truly heard.

“Being in a space where our perspectives as young people are valued has been incredibly empowering.”

She particularly enjoyed supporting secondary school sessions, helping groups develop presentations on mental health issues that mattered to them.

“Witnessing their dedication and the difference they wanted to make was really inspiring.”

Another standout moment was taking part in a video project representing YMCA DownsLink Group.

Growth – personally and professionally

Through her role, Maria has built strong communication skills, confidence in group discussions, and a deeper understanding of digital mental health tools. Supporting others has also encouraged her to reflect on her own wellbeing.

“Talking about mental health regularly has helped me incorporate healthier habits into my own life – things like meditation, talking to friends, and going on more walks.”

“Being a Youth Ambassador has given me a real sense of purpose and confidence from helping others.”

Making a difference

Maria is clear about the importance of youth voice.

“Working with schools and contributing to mental health projects has shown me how important it is for young people to have a voice. Seeing young people lead conversations empowers others to speak up too.”

She believes even small contributions matter.

“Sharing feedback, creating content, or discussing topics -even the small things make a difference to young people.”

Programme perspective

Izzy Taylor runs the Youth Ambassador programme as part of her role as YMCA DownsLink Group Youth Voice Coordinator.

“I’ve been working with the volunteers for nearly two years and even though they all have other commitments, they regularly give up their time to support our projects and events. We are incredibly grateful to all our Youth Ambassadors and volunteers who give their time, energy and insight to support others.

Some of the key opportunities the Youth Ambassadors have been involved with recently include:

  • developing the new Digital Therapy Hub for West Sussex Dialogue
  • helping with our Mental Health Champions project in Brighton & Hove schools
  • creating engaging reels and other content for our social media.

These achievements and outcomes from the Youth Ambassadors Programme have a significant impact on the organisation, ensuring Youth Voice remains at the centre of everything that we do. It really captures the essence of our values, ‘We do what’s right, We work with heart and We build real connection’.”
