Meet Floss - A Right Here volunteer since 2016
I started volunteering for Right Here in June 2016 having just finished school and my GCSE’s. I wanted to spend some of my free time gaining some professional experience and skills beneficial for the future whilst giving back to the community on a topic close to my heart. Right Here gave me the opportunity to develop my knowledge on young people’s mental health within the city of Brighton & Hove and on a national level, allowed me to develop skills and experience in workshop facilitation on topics like exam stress; social media and help-seeking, public speaking in schools, at external events like at a Sussex Police conference and on national platforms like the BBC, campaign designing and developing such as the #IAMWHOLE Campaign, digital resource designing, producing resources for parents and carers, carrying out vital research and finally training GP’s and other health professionals on young people’s mental health.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Right Here and am forever grateful for all the wonderful opportunities I had access to at such a young age which I believe I could not have gained anywhere else! As well as gaining invaluable experience, I enjoyed meeting and working with lots of new people, attended fabulous training events, and even won YMCA’s National Youth Matters Award, Young Campaigner of the Year 2017. The award particularly recognised my #IAMWHOLE campaign work with Jordan Stephens and commitment to tackling stigma and raising awareness about mental health across Brighton, Sussex, and the UK. The campaign work included me featuring in the 2016 #IAMWHOLE Campaign music video, sharing my mental health story and message publicly on national platforms, and sharing my story once again for the 2017 campaign.
After having finished my A Level’s I moved to Bath in September 2018, to study Drama with Psychology at Bath Spa University and still try to get involved with Right Here remotely wherever I can! I now work at The Pauline Quirke Academy as Vice Principal and have been able to continue developing my workshop facilitation skills and practice through university. After completing my degree, I aspire to train as a Secondary Drama teacher and look forward to the next chapter in my life!
I recommend Right Here to anyone living in and around Brighton & Hove and looking to give something back to your community! I did just that and never looked back. It is a wonderful charity that needs its volunteers to help with the crucial work that they do for young people.
Happy Birthday Right Here!
